Overview

The Henry George Foundation (styling itself "The Henry George Foundation of Great Britain") is the leading British organisation dedicated to advancing Henry George's ideas. The United Kingdom has one of the deepest Georgist traditions — George toured Britain to great acclaim, and his ideas shaped Liberal land policy and the 1909 People's Budget.

The Foundation states that it "was established in January 1929 to administer a Trust Fund for spreading a wider knowledge of the social and economic teaching of Henry George as set forth in his books."[1] It describes its purpose as the conviction "that the principles expounded by Henry George offer the only true basis of Economic Freedom and Social Justice, and that their application will remove involuntary poverty, promote industrial and international peace, and make all other reforms easier of accomplishment."[1] Its public strapline is "Promoting principles of Economic Freedom and Social Justice for the welfare of humanity."[2] (Founding date and mission are per the organisation's own account — C-claims.)

It is a registered educational charity (England & Wales No. 259194; Scotland No. SC044360) and a company limited by guarantee (registered in England No. 00956714), operating c/o the School of Philosophy and Economic Science, 11 Mandeville Place, London W1U 3AJ.[1]

Work

The Foundation "supports educational courses, meetings, research, and publications directed at promoting a better understanding of George's ideas and developing them to address the economic issues of the day,"[1] and offers Research Grants. It conducts education and advocacy for land value taxation, and connects the British movement to the international network through the International Union for Land Value Taxation. It works alongside the Labour Land Campaign and others to keep the land question present in UK policy; as of 2026 it was calling on the UK government "to commission a full, independent review of Council Tax and Stamp Duty."[2]

Land & Liberty

The Foundation's "main publication is the journal Land & Liberty," described as having "chronicled world events for over 100 years."[1] The magazine states it "has been published since 1894," offering "reports, features and analysis giving an unique view of the political economy"; it is made available free of charge to anyone who registers interest, and continues to appear (Issue 1268, Summer 2026, published 6 July 2026).[3] Land & Liberty is a long-standing organ of the British land-value movement and is distinct from Christopher England's 2023 scholarly history of the same name (Land and Liberty: Henry George and the Crafting of Modern Liberalism), which this wiki cites elsewhere.
