Overview

Critics of Henry George: A Centenary Appraisal of Their Strictures on Progress and Poverty is an edited scholarly anthology, first published in 1979 by Fairleigh Dickinson University Press (Rutherford, NJ) and Associated University Presses (London), edited by philosopher Robert V. Andelson (Auburn University).[1] The book gathers and critically appraises, chapter by chapter, the objections leveled against Henry George's Progress and Poverty by figures ranging from Alfred Marshall and John Bates Clark to twentieth-century critics such as Murray Rothbard and Mark Blaug. It has been described as the most comprehensive review and analysis of the strictures against George's single-tax argument.[1] Andelson substantially revised and expanded the work into a two-volume second edition, published by Blackwell in 2004 under the title Critics of Henry George: An Appraisal of Their Strictures on Progress and Poverty.[2]

Because the book's purpose is to compile the opposing case against the single tax essay by essay, it functions on this wiki as a reference index into the critical literature rather than as a source for any single claim — later pages on named critics and objections may cite specific chapters once read in full.
