The Geonomist on Earth’s Failing Report Card

Our dominant species might not dominate much longer unless we change our ways. And how do we change the way we chew up and spew into our Earthly home? Actually, the economic solution is not that hard.
What we have to do is correct the price signal. Now we make bads cheap — as with the subsidies for fossil fuels and strip-mining the oceans ( see the recent BBC article ) — and make goods expensive — as with taxes on earnings, enterprise, and edifices. Reversing that so polluters pay and producers are not penalized is the hard part.
But couldn’t we who care reach a critical mass of our fellow human beings if we pointed out that not only do we have to stop harming the environment but also we can reach that goal by saving money and de-taxing our efforts? The tough part is to persuade people to pay land dues (or land taxes). But if they got back a “rent” dividend then they just might be willing to contribute the dues that they owe — and rescue life on Earth in the process.
