Palaver from Persimmon Crossing
with Warren Faulk
We are the people, some of us, who say no war, no matter what.
We are also the people who say we should go to war, at every affront.
We are the people who talk to each other, directly, in sound bites.
- … John Walker Lindh should be shot, I think welfare should be cancelled, We should pray for peace, We should bomb them back to the stone age, The bibles predictions are about to be fulfilled, I don’t want my kid to die in some raghead war, My taxes are too high, We should have better roads, I never vote, Washington is a mess, People who abuse drugs should be in jail, I smoke too much….
Some actually take the time to consider the pros and cons of issues. Others, dare I say most others, do not. Not until put in the position of having to act on their beliefs in any case.
To those who say Lindh is a traitor. I say we have due process for a reason. There is time. Use the time. There are other possibilities. He may even be a hero. He may be a misguided youth. He may have had the courage to go, where most would not dare to go, in search of answers. He may be guilty of treason. Let’s find out. Even if he is guilty he may still be a valuable, unique asset to our intelligence services.
As sloppy as our welfare programs may be at times, would any of us risk starving even one child, red, yellow, black, white or some of these new colors we are sprouting? Could we just shut a program down without knowing the beneficiaries and what would happen to them? We are a caring people. Let us take care.
Every little town, every county and state and all three branches of the federal government are busily making laws. Every citizen regularly makes decisions about which laws to obey and when. They say we are a nation of laws … and the strongest of these is the law of averages.
