Coca Cola Plans to Raise Prices Depending on Momentary Temperature
Publisher’s note — funny, frequently we must turn to sources beyond the USA in order to find out some of the juiciest news about USA companies. Fraser Nelson, reporting in the London Times, has found an interesting plan by Coca-Cola. You can expect other news outlets to pick up on this soon. Here are a few excerpts from Nelson’s report.
COCA-COLA is working on a new vending machine which would automatically increase the price of soft drinks when it senses hotter weather. Doug Ivester, the chairman of Coca-Cola, has admitted that the company is looking at new technology which could insert a thermometer in its machines so that they can put the cost up when the temperature rises.
He admitted that the company hoped to make more money when people get thirsty in warmer weather. Mr Ivester, talking to the Brazillian magazine Veja, said: “Coca-Cola is a product whose utility varies from moment to moment. In a final summer [sports] championship when people meet in a stadium to enjoy themselves, the utility of Coke is very high. So it is fair to make it more expensive. The machine will simply make the process automatic.”
Coca-Cola’s profits have been falling for many months now and its shares, which are traded in New York, have almost halved over the past year amid fears that Coke has expanded as far as it can.
It recently had to give away eight million drinks in Belgium as an apology for letting contaminated carbon dioxide into its bottling plant at Antwerp. This caused nausea in hundreds of Coke and Fanta drinkers. An apology by Coca-Cola was published in 15 newspapers and broadcast on television.
Aspartame, the artificial “Nutrasweet” sweetener used in many Coke products, has come under tremendous fire recently as study after study found harmful effects of the chemical and its byproducts such as formaldehyde.
