You Should Be Aware of Corporate Excesses
US-UnderSiege Shines the Light of Truth

At US-UnderSiege we are committed to the conviction that corporations have
far too much power in our country and, increasingly, in the world at large.
This has been partly true in the U. S. for more than a century, but the
power they exert has reached, in the past four decades, a level that has
become a clear threat to our democracy, our personal freedom, and, if not
our present standard of living, certainly to the standards that will be
available to our children and grandchildren.
There are, admittedly, a number of other organizations on the Internet committed to the same position. Many of them have a history of experience, a breadth of knowledge, membership support, and other resources far beyond what we can claim. Why, then, start another web site? There are a number of needs that we would like to try to meet. One: We want to try, as do many others more skilled and knowledgeable than ourselves, to present the most current, the most significant, and the most urgent stories we can find of the corporate abuses of power that are occurring in our time. We will need to borrow freely from others, and fortunately there are a few widely respected sources who either place no restrictions on the use of their material or have generously given us permission to quote from their articles. We will do this without apology and with great care to indicate the sources and how others may access those sources. Two: When you are looking for the vital stories that are not covered adequately in the popular news media, you have a lot to choose from. Unlike most progressive news sites, which rightly report and comment on many subjects, we want to maintain a sharp focus upon the specific problem of excessive corporate presence and influence in our lives. For anyone who wants to comment on things amiss in our times the temptation is almost irresistible to write or speak about these things. We want to resist this temptation. It's hard to do, because it is easy to find some corporation involvement in most of our human tragedies. But we want to resist it, because in our minds the corporation problem is so basic that it needs to have a constant spotlight upon it. As important as the bombing of a federal office building or the halting of ethnic cleansing may be, such events should not be allowed to divert our attention from the less sensational but equally important corporate assault upon our freedom and our future. Three: We want to do more than tell the story. We believe that it is equally important to encourage people to believe that they can do something about it. We do not claim to have all the answers -- no one does -- but we are committed to the belief that ordinary people -- not just the wealthy, the powerful, the charismatic -- still hold the ultimate responsibility for the course of humanity. We are not helpless. As voters and consumers we have far more power than many people think. So, when we cry foul at the arrogance and exploitation of the mega-corporations, we will also dare to tell what we think the people can and should do to slow down and perhaps even change the direction of the runaway locomotive that may be pulling us all into the serfdom of another Dark Ages. We don't expect everyone to agree with us. Our best hope is that someday enough of our neighbors will see the possibility of change and engage in dialogue long enough to find some answers and then move together to shape a more just and less painful world.
