Palaver from Persimmon Crossing

Drafting Legislators
I am for a modified form of the Selective Service "Draft" to require pretty near every citizen to perform some kind of national service. I'll reserve further comment on this until another time. I have bigger fish to fry.
Just today it came to me that we could draft our legislators. In one fell swoop we could eliminate campaigns and campaign finance problems, failed and fraudulent elections. Everyone would have an equal opportunity and responsibility to serve ... once.
Might as well go ahead and shape the whole system up while I'm at it.
Eligibility:This is "ink", not concrete. An outline, not a complete plan. Nobody would have thought anything about this if the country had been started this way. From the looks of the mish mash we are in, it should have been.Must have been a citizen for at least 5 years.
Terms:
Must be mentally and physically competent to serve.
Must be 30 to 55 years old at start of term.
Four years.
Each legislative district would have two legislators with their terms staggered.Organization:
A single legislative body would prepare and present all prospective laws for the President's signature.
Veto power and override would be in effect.
States would be authorized legislative districts based on total population and draw their own district boundaries.Compensation:
Every legislator would receive the same base pay.
Travel allowances and expense accounts within reason.
Retirement would be as provided by the Social Security Administration.

Someone once asked John Lennon how government decisions should be made, and he said "by toss of coin." That would, of course, be an enormous improvement over the current situation. How about Warren Waulk's ideas above? Share your reactions with your fellow readers at The Progress Report:
