A useful source for finding congressional
members whose views are compatible with those of
the DFC, is an organization called Taxpayers for
Common Sense, which stands for cutting wasteful
spending, including corporate welfare, pork
barrel, and other waste. Their ratings of Congress
can be reached at http://www.taxpayer.net. We've
found that a Democrat with a solid record on civil
liberties and a high rating from TCS is usually a
"DFC Democrat", even if they don't know it yet!
One of the DFC's biggest goals during this election will be to increase our visibility among these Democrats and let them know that we support their courageous stands for freedom and the public interest. An example of a Democrat who has impressed us over the years is Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin has a lot of fans in the DFC. He has advocated a progressive social agenda while at the same time being one of the most fiscally responsible members of Congress, Republican or Democrat. While pork barrel spending has exploded under Bush and the Republican Congress, you can be sure that Feingold has not been a party to it. |

A few members of Congress who have since retired
but were influential for many members of
the DFC were Rep. Tim Penny (D-MN) and Sen.
William Proxmire (D-WI). Penny was a tireless
opponent of pork barrel spending in his 12 years
in Congress, and wrote a book in his retirement
that should be required reading for just about
anybody interested in politics, called "The 15
Biggest Lies in Politics". He takes on some of
the sacred cows of both parties and in the process,
lays out a platform pretty similar to the DFC.
Proxmire became famous for his "Golden Fleece Award" where he exposed ridiculous examples of wasteful spending on a regular basis. When he was shocked that the US failed to sign an international convention on genocide (there was considerable opposition from southern segregationists), he gave a one-minute speech on the topic every day for nearly twenty years until the US finally ratified it. Proxmire and Penny are both on the Advisory Board of Taxpayers for Common Sense, mentioned above. |
