A Chance for Healthy Competition
FCC PLAN FOR LOCAL RADIO STATIONS
(Publisher's note -- here's the problem. Large broadcast station owners enjoy a monopoly without paying its market value. The FCC is considering opening the market to a little bit of competition. But the monopoly stations want to keep other radio stations from starting. Please support the FCC's initiative to allow new low-power radio stations.)
Public outcry, and a lot of it, may be the only way to make this potential victory stick. The FCC is taking comments until April 12th on the make-up of the new licensing regulations. This is a very rare opportunity to pro-actively influence the status of our publicly-owned airwaves.
What You Can Do:
* Write letters/email the FCC and thank them for the leadership toward the legalization of new FM radio stations.
* Contact Community Powered Radio (CPR) in Seattle to join the growing list of community groups, civic organizations and neighbors signing on to support a formal presentation to the FCC in April. Add your voice to those of the National Lawyers' Guild, FAIR, the California Green Party, and many others! If you wish, CPR can give a presentation to your organization on this important right to communicate and also can provide materials for inclusion in your organization's newsletter.
* Get involved locally. All communities need help in making low-power radio that serves the interests of their neighborhoods. We need your input and energy to make group presentations, provide micro-radio resources, and educate about the necessity for truly democratic media. For starters, email to: cpr@gurlmail.com
