Action Alert -- Oppose Untested GM Foods
Senators Need to Hear Your Voice
Who would you rather trust when your children eat food that might or might not be safe -- scientists, or private corporate lobbyists? Citizens in Europe have the right to know whether any genetically-modified ingredients are in their food, but anti-freedom lobbyists in the USA are trying to steal that right away from U.S. citizens. Now is the time to ask your Senators to show leadership on this issue. Here is a call to action from the Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods. So far no U.S. Senators have joined California Senator Barbara Boxer as co-sponsors of S 2080, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act. The primary reason we are hearing from Senators for not co-sponsoring the legislation is that they have not heard from enough voters in their states on this issue.
For example, New York Senator Charles Schumer is sending out a letter to people who write him about this issue that states: "Thank you for contacting me regarding the labeling of genetically engineered foods. I agree that these foods should be labeled so that consumers can make informed choices." Yet in spite of his position in favor of labeling, Senator Schumer has still not signed on to the bill. On Thursday, activists met with Senator Schumer's legislative staff and asked why he had not yet co-sponsored the legislation. We understand the reason the legislative staff gave was that Senator Schumer had not heard from enough concerned citizens in the state of New York yet.
Please write or telephone your two Senators' offices. Telephone numbers of the Senator's offices and even the names of the legislative aides can be found on this web site -- simply click on the link that says "Meet your Congressional Delegation."
To find the names of the legislative aides (LA), once you are at the Senator's main page, click on the link under their photo that says: "Staff Members"
Please ask your friends and associates call their two Senators offices and ask the legislative aides when the Senators are going to sponsor the legislation. Or ask them to write letters.
The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods also offers "Take Action Packets" that you might be interested in. Again, visit their web site at http://www.thecampaign.org for additional information.
