Trying to Force Genetically-Altered Food Past Scientists and Consumers

Here are a few excerpts from recent news reports, and our cynical response. Why are so few media unwilling to report on the corrupt, monopolistic activities of the genetic manipulators and their lobbyists?

NEWS ITEM -- The Italian government has temporarily suspended the use of seven genetically-modified food products, a Health Ministry statement said.

"Following opinions from the Italian Health Institute and the Health Council, the Health Ministry will take a precautionary step, in conformity with EU regulations, to suspend temporarily the use of the substances," it said.

AND WE SAY -- Fine. But please note that the World Trade Organization and lobbyists want such health policies to be illegal! They are seeking to make such suspensions of genetically-modified food products banned, declared as "barriers to trade." Health and safety risks would be ignored and consumers would have no legal remedies if they were harmed by genetically-modified foods.

NEWS ITEM -- Environmental group Greenpeace released a revised list of more than 80 French food products it said were susceptible of containing genetically modified (GM) organisms.

Greenpeace said the list, which included everything from ready-made pizzas to candy bars to baby food, was the latest in its attempt to alert consumers to what they were eating.

AND WE SAY -- Very nice. But please note that the World Trade Organization and lobbyists want such information to be banned! They are seeking to make content information, labels, even labels that merely reveal the nation of a product's origin, banned as "barriers to trade." Factual information would be unlawful and consumers would have no legal remedies if they were harmed due to withholding of such information.

NEWS ITEM -- The United States and the European Union fleshed out plans for talks on genetically modified crops that a growing number of scientists, researchers, scholars, and consumers view with suspicion.

EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy told reporters the two sides had agreed on a "double framework" for the biotechnology discussions, which were first proposed earlier this fall.

A senior-level group of regulatory officials will focus on issues such as the approval of new genetically modified crop varieties and labeling requirements for food containing genetically modified ingredients.

A second group, made up of "senior wise personalities" from both sides of the Atlantic would address the issue "in more cultural terms," Lamy said at a press conference following an U.S.-EU summit meeting.

AND WE SAY -- That's an old trick. They form two groups, one of which will be private and kept away from public scrutiny. The second group is just a "ghetto" for scientists, consumers and everyone else to blow off steam while the real decisions are made by the first group. Why are the governments trying to trick their own citizens?

Don't accept a ghetto. Your opinions deserve to be heard by the powerful people, the ones who are willing to listen to lobbyists. Why should scientists and citizens be a second-class group while the real decisions are made by lobbyists and politicians?

Why are the genetic manipulators unwilling to have an open dialogue with citizens and scientists? Why are they hiding from science and refusing to give consumers full information? Why are the manipulators so afraid of what would happen in a free market with no special privilege for genetically manipulated foods? Tell your opinion to The Progress Report:
