Fred is right-on-the-money again. I have always been angered by the sanctimonious pseudo pious claptrap that the Bible is "supposedly" telling us that it is okay for people to be destitute, because "that is the way things will always be."
I sometimes fear that we suffer under the curse of having the poor-in-spirit so prevalent amongst us, and I believe that it is those people who have neither interest nor the gumption to attempt to right the basic wrongs of our society who cause the indigent and the needy.
As Fred, and others, have written before, unfetter society, and the unsatiable wants of humanity will have jobs screaming for takers, and when those conditions are in place then the natural pride of a human being can rise above the waters of Cannot-Do, to the beckoning sea of Let-me-at-it.
The way things are now, we prevent people from working, and then sneer at them for lacking in ambition. I hope that God forgives us for this. I cannot.
