Democratic Debate, or Halloween Phantom?

A Real Presidential Debate?

We have received reports that a genuine debate open to all the candidates for U.S. president is scheduled for Friday, October 20. Will it really happen, or are organizers simply playing trick-or-treat with the American people's desire for true democracy? Here are excerpts from two news announcements about this.

On Friday, October 20, from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. Eastern time, Judicial Watch will host a nationally televised presidential debate featuring six of the seven qualified presidential candidates. John Hagelin, Al Gore, Ralph Nader, Pat Buchanan, Harry Browne, and Howard Phillips have all accepted -- only George W. Bush has declined.

C-SPAN has committed to televising the debate, and Fox TV and American Voice Radio are considering coverage. The debate will be moderated by a highly respected journalist, and the panel will be composed of other journalists from well-known national newspapers--both so-called liberal and so-called conservative.

Seven lecterns will be set up on stage -- no matter who attends the debate. Each candidate will give an opening and closing statement and will be asked questions by the panel in rotating order.

The questions, while not set in advance, will reflect Judicial Watch concerns about ethics in politics--bribery laws, corporate control of government, independent counsel issues, etc.

This certainly promises to be the most interesting and representative presidential debate of the season. As always, please check your local listings for up-to-the-minute scheduling; TV and radio news stations reserve the right to make last-minute changes.

Judicial Watch announced today that Jim Bohannon, nationally syndicated radio talk show host on the Westwood One radio network, has agreed to serve as moderator for Judicial Watch’s Ethics in Government Presidential Debate. The debate will take place on October 20 in Washington DC’s Ronald Reagan Center at 8:00 p.m.

Bohannon joins panelists Paul Rodriguez (Insight Magazine), Joe Farah (WorldNetDaily.com), Blanquita Cullum (Radio America) and Armstrong Williams (nationally-syndicated columnist and radio host). Another so-called liberal panelist will be added in the days ahead.

“We are especially pleased that Jim Bohannon will moderate Judicial Watch’s Ethics in Government Presidential Debate. This is the first opportunity for the American people to hear the candidates’ position on one the most important issues facing the public – integrity in government,’ stated Larry Klayman, Judicial Watch Chairman and General Counsel.
