If Not Now ... When?
Seems that about every other Presidency we come to the point where one side accuses the other of dishonorable conduct for having criticized a sitting President in an ongoing war. And along with this comes the idea that those who oppose a war openly are not in support of our troops. Well maybe some don’t truly support the troops. Some may be fully ready to cut off funds and supplies. Where in all this does one place a pro war activist who willingly offers up the lives of others so that he may continue to profit from the sale of goods and services? From these two positions who is most honorable?
In the course of my life I have been for two wars … World War II And Korea though saddened by the loss of friends in both of these. I was for and then against the Vietnam War. For it out of ignorance initially and very much against it later on as I became involved and came to understand more about it.
Somewhere along the line I formed the opinion that no country has the right or is called to dictate to another what its domestic or foreign policy should be unless physically attacked by that country.
I was against our invasion of Iraq. Still, I love our troops who followed their orders and continue to follow orders in trying to accomplish very difficult tasks. I accept that we have incurred a debt by our aggression. I believe this debt will be better satisfied by reparations rather than a lengthy military occupation. And we should apologize.
I resent the fact that the 48th Brigade of the GEORGIA National Guard is in Iraq, in harms way, with a countrywide security mission rather than being at home where I contend they belong.
Waging peace is far more difficult than waging war but maybe we should try it anyway.
