Palaver from Persimmon Crossing
with Warren Faulk
Michael Jackson Notwithstanding
Cuddling up with children is NOT a bad thing.
But ... but ... but nothing!
Grownups and children are supposed to be affectionate. They are supposed to be totally comfortable with their loved ones. Close contact between adults and much loved children may be the single must important and enjoyable thing that is offered to man or beast. I know of nothing I value more. Even the monkeys know.
I very much resent the pounding that the very idea of a grownup and a child lying down together is getting, morning, noon and night. It just gets hung out there "sleeping with children", dripping with innuendo. What in the heck is an eight year old supposed to think when he hears these words in these tones? What gives anyone the right or reason to seek to damage that bond, when it does exist, between an adult and child? I believe we are doing real harm to our children in potentially alienating them from loving adults. Appropriate physical relationships between adults and children are being put at risk by the way this particular situation is being handled. How can we be sure that our children will understand that what is being said doesn't mean "us".
So, if there is a questionable act to be dealt with, let us speak clearly about the act in words that do no harm, or hold our peace. And if anyone can say that the sight of a mother nursing her baby or my wife sleeping with one of our babies or any other willing child is somehow inappropriate, please contact me and I will put you on my prayer list. I will pray that you somehow sleep and awake with a child snuggling against you and that in that moment before you are fully conscious and before your opinions make a mess of things, you will know bliss.
