I don't want to be accused of being something that I am not ... like a terrorist. So, if I point out something that seems obvious and don't give any details maybe you can just stop at labeling me a concerned citizen.
There are these things called firecrackers. There are dozens of different kinds ... and every single one of them is at least a detonator and most qualify as explosives. In bunches they are bombs. Any size you want short of nuclear. In combination with nitrogen fertilizer, motor fuel or a grain silo they are the terrorist's best friend.
For anyone bent on blowing something up, yet giving himself time to get away ... the detonator is the only difficult part. Fireworks solve the riddle, providing relatively predictable components, for sale in retail markets with no control in several states. And in these states they sell to any buyer, knowing full well that many of these products will be used illegally in other states. Nobody buys firecrackers just to look at the package.
It seems to me that the fireworks business would have been among the first to fall to the Homeland Security forces. That would, of course, have required a lot of political courage. FireCrackers and the 4th of July are joined at the hip. If there were any controls applied they don't appear to have been effective. Fireworks were much in evidence in backyard Georgia ... where they are illegal ... on this 4th of July.
This article could have been written by any 7th grade kid on his first fireworks outing or at least by a rookie policeman going through his initial training. Anybody with just an ounce of prevention in his makeup...
